There is History out if you know where to search for it.
=======================================
On Tuesday (9/7/2002) I went with a group interested in seeing how the archives of our past are kept.We travelled to Brunswick where the Melbourne University Archives are kept. There we met Professors,Librarians,cataloguers who took us through the process of finding the information that was stored in their archives.
We all slected a category to search for..I chose Swallow & Ariel Biscuit Factory.
I found that there were boxes containing hand written ledgers,recipe books printed in the 1920,s labels for tins of biscuits,recipes belonging to the bakers in various departments.
Photos of various picnic days held by staff.Photos of presentations given by staff for good service
Rows and rows of women packing biscuits in the factory,in their overalls and caps,women and young girls leaving by the factory door after a long hard day on their feet.
This part of the history of Swallows was given to the Melb.Uni by Mr Derham.
Other memorabilia from Kitchens P/L (soap manuf).Did you know that when the first telephone exchange in AUSTRALIA was opened in Melbourne in 1880 Kitchens and Swallows were among the first busineses to subscribe .Kitchens number was 36 and Swallows was 21.
I could have spent hours and hours just reminising but time did not allow for this the bus was here to pick us up. Lois Daley Thursday 10/7/2002
