Today (Wednesday 21 st Nov 2001) as I walked my dog Jessie I went down along the foreshore between Princes and Station piers up along Beach St and into Bay st.
It crossed my mind as to what the good design guidelines really mean.Does any lay person really know exactly what constitues a badly designed ,not in sympathy with the overall enviornment building is called.I looked at the two new restaurants on Station pier made of corrugated steel or iron and cannot see how they can be called harmonious in design when looking at the classified pier .Then as I walked down Bay St to the Graham St corner I see the block of apartments built in front of the old Holy Trinity Church of England ,if you look carefully you may just be able to see the front tower of the old church. It most certainly looks better then the ugly design of the present construction .I once again ask the question of the powers that be WHAT IS GOOD DESIGN .Can it be described ,is it understandable to us mortals,is it written in the plain English Language ???????.
I won't walk along that end of Bay st again .I will walk along the beach front perhaps toward St Kilda where I feel the newer buildings along this part of the city of Port Phillip are of a much higher calibre then those being or have been constructed in Port Melbourne. Why I ask myself as the late Prof.Julius Sumner Miller was heard to say WHY IS IT SO ...Today I feel sad to what I see Lois Daley Port Melbourne Wed.21/11/2001
