Tonight it is late as I walk along the promenade past Station Pier ,my dog Jessie loves to jump on the wall above the water peering down eyes bright ,tail wagging at what I know not,but it pleases her ,perhaps it is the lights dancing on the water or movements we humans do not see. The promenade is well lit and those with balconies looking out to sea are indeed blessed as they look to the left and can see the lights of St.Kilda and to their right Williamstown is visible in the distance with lights flickering .The fog is settling in as we near the end of the walkway making the air crisp and damp .
In the days and years past these two piers Princes and Station were alive with ships tied up at the wharf either loading cargo or getting ready to sail sometime the next day .They were brightly alive and one could see through the portholes into the small cabins .The piers were open to all to meander along looking at the ships in dock,or for those wishing to sit with a line and fish at the piers end.
Today we see little of this active hive of movement as most cargo now goes by container ship from the dock area and travelling overseas is by plane ,Tasmania remains the main source of sea tourism from Victoria and is a journey to be savoured and enjoyed .
To leave a Port and watch the shoreline disappear and in the morning find yourself coming into another port to tie up I think is a more relaxing way to start a holiday or a new journey. As I have remarked to many give me a train or a ship and I am content
